Josef and Anna Maria Hinterhauser

Josef was born 17 January 1789; the first child of Martin and Katharina.  He was born in the village of Brestowatz located in the Batschka region of Hungary, part of the Austrian Empire1, 2.  Josef was the first generation of Hinterhauser to be born and grow up among the new people known as the Danube Schwabians.  Josef was only 3 years old when his father died in 1793, so he probably didn't know much about his father.  He may have had to assume the role as the man of the house at an early age, which may explain why he didn't marry until he was 28 years old.  He married Anna Maria Teppert on 28 January 1817 in the nearby village of Weprowatz, where Anna and her family probably lived at the time6

Anna Maria Teppert was the 2nd generation in her family to grow up Danube Schwabian.  She was born to Andreas and Susanna Teppert on 8 January 1799, 10 years after Josef's birth.  She was born in the village of Apatin, located on the Danube River northwest of Weprowatz.  Her and Josef presumably moved to Filipowa after their marriage and had all three Children there.  Anna died on 13 November 1856 in Filipowa.

Who are the Danube Schwabians?

The Hapsburgs of Austria decided to settle the lands in Hungary and surrounding areas after years of Turkish rule in the area left it a virtual wasteland.  They wanted German settlers and offered them good deals if they would settle and cultivate the land.

Although the settlers came from many different Germanic areas, to include Hesse, Palatinate, Wuertemberg, the Hungarians came to call them Swabians.  With this integration of many different German customs and varying dialects, a new ethnic group was formed; the Danube Schwabians.

After WWII the partisans of the gaining communist party took control of the area and many of the Danube Schwabians were imprisoned in Russian labor camps and some were forced out of the area, back towards Germany.  Even though all this took place, the Danube Schwabian culture lives on through various clubs and organizations throughout North America and museums devoted to the Danube Schabian in Germany.
